Do I need a fire risk assessment?

Yes — the Fire Safety Order states that the ‘responsible person’ must provide a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment. Once the assessment has been completed, it should be recorded and reviewed on a regular basis. The fire risk assessment should be conducted by a competent person and can be outsourced to a third-party accredited individual or company.

What does it mean to be a ‘responsible person’ in fire safety regulation?

The ‘responsible person’ is accountable for fire safety in a place of work. Depending on the type of premises, the ‘responsible person’ may be the employer, owner, landlord, occupier, or anyone else with control of the building. For all premises that fall within the scope of the Fire Safety Order, there will always be a ‘responsible person’.

How often do I need to have my portable fire extinguishers serviced?

Portable fire extinguishers should be serviced once every year (12 months).

The Fire Safety Order states that portable fire extinguishers (fire-fighting equipment) must be provided in your workplace and subjected to a suitable maintenance schedule. The British Standard offers additional guidance about fire extinguishers and their servicing requirements.
