Working in Brighton & Hove

Few places pack as much into their buildings as Brighton. Hotels and guest houses, restaurants, bars and shops fill the seafront, The Lanes and North Laine, often in tightly packed older properties with living accommodation above. Commercial kitchens need the right equipment for cooking-oil fires, and premises where guests sleep need particular care over escape routes and signage.

The city also has a large number of houses in multiple occupation, and Regency and Victorian houses converted into flats. The shared parts of these buildings — hallways, stairs and landings — fall under the Fire Safety Order, and the landlord or managing agent needs a fire risk assessment that covers them.

We carry out PAS 79 compliant fire risk assessments, supply and service extinguishers to BS 5306, and install Jalite photoluminescent signage so escape routes stay visible if the lights go out.

Common questions

Brighton & Hove fire safety FAQs

Do I need a fire risk assessment for an HMO or block of flats in Brighton & Hove?

Yes, for the shared parts. The Fire Safety Order applies to the common areas of houses in multiple occupation and blocks of flats, and the landlord or managing agent is normally the responsible person.

Who enforces fire safety law in Brighton & Hove?

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service enforces the Fire Safety Order in the city. Housing standards in rented homes, including HMO licensing, are dealt with by Brighton & Hove City Council.

Which extinguisher does a commercial kitchen need?

Cooking oils and fats are Class F fires, which call for a wet chemical extinguisher. Most kitchens also need cover for other risks, such as electrical equipment. We'll survey the kitchen and recommend only what it needs.
